Halloween Weekend Open Hours 10/31 and 11/1

Enjoy nature's autumn display while enjoying a leisurely socially distanced visit and/or DIYpicnic. We'll have fun fall-focused activities for all ages including phenology walks, halloween candy hunts, self-guided scavenger hunts and leaf-rubbing. Visitors are welcome to come in their halloween costumes.

Can You Capture Nature's Beauty? Autumn Photography Contest 10/14, 10/21, 10/28

Autumn is one of the prettiest times of the year here, and to celebrate its beauty we are hosting our first photography contest. On the last three Wednesdays of October, we welcome photographers of all levels and ages to stroll the gardens and capture the remarkable autumn landscape in pictures. On those days, the grounds will be open from 2:00-5:00 pm to photograph autumn scenes. Each photographer may submit up to 5 photos. The prize categories are: Best Autumn Color, Best Close-up, Best Panorama. The winning "Best Autumn Color" photo will be showcased as our banner photo in November's e-newsletter, and we will post all entries on our facebook page. Masks and social distancing required. $10 individuals; $15 families.

Fall Family Fun Days for Columbus Day Weekend at the Wakefield Estate

Enjoy the autumn colors over Columbus Day weekend! Families and individuals are invited to find a nice spot to take in nature in all its autumn splendor while enjoying a leisurely and socially distanced visit and/or BYO picnic. Visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy the labyrinths, self-guided scavenger hunts, walks on the new QR trail, or take a self-guided garden tour. Open hours are noon to 4:00 pm on Saturday, October 10 and Sunday, October 11.
On Monday, Oct 12, families will have another chance for a special "Visit with the Animals" from 3:00-5:00 pm. Betty and Navajo, the lovely and engaging female guard llamas will be greeting guests along with their charges - Dart, Bug, and Ashe - three Shetland sheep that they "protect."  Families will also have the opportunity to enjoy a visit with Flora and Marty, the giant angora rabbits, and visit the chickens in their chicken coop. Visitors will especially enjoy meeting Pumpkin, the adorable and friendly miniature rooster.
Admission limited to 25 per day. Reservations and masks required. $10 individuals; $15 families. Please RSVP by calling 617-333-0924 x22 or reserve your spot through the links below. These events are weather dependent and will be postponed in the event of rain. The Mary May Binney Wakefield Arboretum is located at 1465 Brush Hill Road, Milton.

Expand your Gardening Knowledge at our 3-pt Series starting 10/1

2021 Can Be A Great Year in Your Garden! 3 Session Series to Expand your Gardening Knowledge Begins October 1st.
Had enough of this year and ready for 2021? Spending time on your garden this fall is a great way to plan for, anticipate, and most importantly, look forward to next year. On October 1st, the Wakefield Estate will launch a terrific 3-session zoom series that will help you build your gardening and expand your knowledge of horticulture. Prepare you to make changes and enhance your garden in ways that you can enjoy in 2021. These sessions will be presented by Arboretum Director Debbie Merriam at 5 pm on the first Thursday of the next three months and will be offered entirely online.
October 1, 5:00 via zoom: Common ground covers and beyond
This slide presentation explores the wonderful world of ground covers and highlights the some interesting varieties that are available in the trade. Many ground covers are drought tolerant, colorful, important for wildlife and make great substitutes for turf. Planting, spacing and general maintenance will also be discussed.
November 5, 5:00 via zoom: Plant combinations in the garden
The Wakefield has an interesting collection of woody plants. Many of them have been arranged in the landscape to highlight their unique features and show off combinations of fruit, bark, leaf shape and colors. This presentation will highlight some of these combinations and the decision making process that led to those combinations.
December 3, 5:00 via zoom: Conifers for the New England Landscape
Conifers come in all sizes, shapes and colors. The Mary May Binney Wakefield Arboretum is a certified Reference Garden for the American Conifer Society. This session will discuss the evolution of the the development of the conifer collection and how these incredible plants can add color and texture to the garden year round.
