R.I.P. Henry, king of the roosters

We were sad to see the passing of Henry the rooster this past weekend. Henry was given to us by Anthony Sammarco, along with seven hens, when he moved from the Suffolk Resolves house in Milton. Henry was named after the king, and two of the hens came with the names Mary and Elizabeth. Henry was always a favorite of […]

Davenport Mansion Delights during Holiday Open House

Despite the balmy temps outside, the Davenport mansion exuded an enchanting holiday feel at last week’s Annual Holiday Open House. Boasting a freshly painted front entry side and piazza, along with the most elaborate decorations and collections display, the mansion has never looked more stunning and visitors were delighted by the opportunity to peek at some of the recent discoveries […]

Eagle Scout Project Creates New Boardwalk

On a recent Saturday, Eagle scout candidate Will Vinke directed a project to build a boardwalk at the low point of the estate property. In the spring, run-off makes it impossible to get to this area, where glacial deposits of roxbury puddingstone, native plants, and beautiful stone walls make it an important educational area. Over three dozen volunteers participated in the day-long effort […]

Thacher students give Wakefield stonewalls a “style”

A team of students from Thacher Montesorri’s Adolescent Program have just completed construction of the estate’s first stile (also spelled style). A stile is defined as a set of steps for passing over a fence or wall, and is more commonly seen in the United Kingdom. Here at the estate, stiles will be valuable to keep people from climbing over and […]

Fall is still dazzling at the estate!

Although we were prepared for substantial damage, the estate made it through Hurricane Sandy’s wrath with relatively little damage. The storm did bring down an abundance of leave but a surpringly brilliant array of color was on display this past weekend. We hope you enjoy these photos.

Plan to join us for our next outdoor “fire” event, Winterfire, which will be held in January. Watch our events calendar for date and details to follow.

Tufts’ Collections Interns’ Fantastic Finds!

This summer was the third year the Wakefield Estate had collection interns through its partnership with the Tufts Museum Studies program. The graduate students help catalogue the collection of items housed at the Mary Wakefield Trusts property in Milton, MA and assist in making curatorial decisions about what objects should be included in the collection. Two of this year’s interns, […]

Summer Archaeology’s Treasure Trove-part 2

The 2012 Summer Archaeology Institute concluded in early August after 4 exciting weeks of excavation at a site believed to be the location of the original “summer house.” By the end of the 2nd session, the archaeologists had located the original stone foundation of the summer house, which was torn down in the early 20th century. The area was then covered […]

2012 Summer Landscape Interns Set the Bar High

This summer was the sixth year the Wakefield Estate assembled a Summer Landscape Crew and we think this year’s crew may have been the best yet. Eight students from local high schools united as a team for six weeks, proving that sometimes when the right combination of people pull together, eight can accomplish the work of twelve! We’re very proud […]
