Thacher Helps Estate Pursue Audubon Certification

We are partnering with our neighbors next door, the Thacher Montessori School,  to be certified through the Audubon Cooperate Sanctuary Program.  This program helps businesses and organizations conduct proactive environmental projects that benefit people and the environment by addressing four key environmental quality areas: Wildlife Habitat Management, Resource Conservation, Waste Management, and Outreach & Education.

Thacher’s Upper Elementary students are currently working on the first step of Environmental Planning.  During the next month, they will be filling out a resource inventory and environmental plan to tell Audubon International staff about the estate’s and the school’s current practices and conservation goals.  Once this baseline has been established, the Upper Elementary studnets will design and implement environmental improvement projects such as recycling, energy conservation, landscape management, and community outreach.

The achievement of becoming a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary conveys national recognition of environmental excellence bestowed to organizations that are taking a leadership role in conservation projects.  Thacher Montessori School and the Mary M. B. Wakefield Charitable Trust believe that certification is achievable by summer and look forward to the input, support, and enthusiasm of the participants from the Upper Elementary classes, their parents, and the public.
