July Plant of the Month – Aesculus parvifolia

Aesculus parvifolia or Bottlebrush Buckeye are phenomenal large suckering shrubs that create lush walls of foliage and have unique candle or bottle brush flowers. These plants are in the Sapindacea or Soapberry family, which includes maples, lychees, and horse chesnuts. They flower in July, attracting bees, moths and butterflies. Many moths rely on the Bottlebrush Buckeye as a host plant for thier larvae, including the wtricking sphynx moth. Find beautiful specimens all over the arbroetum, specifically, along the lattice garden, under the Dawn Redwoods and past the chicken coop.
