Meet Jack, our guard llama!
We are happy to introduce Jack, our new guard llama. After adding our three ewes, Maisy, Daisy, and Binney to our existing livestock population of over 30 chickens, visits from the neighborhood coyotes increased greatly in frequency. While our newly acquired electric fence enclosure is a deterrent, coyotes are known for their wiles and we worried about losing one or more of our sheep. Llamas are prized as vigilant protectors of sheep, using their large ears to hear an approaching predator and making a loud, shrill warning call to alert their herd. When warned, the sheep flock to Jack’s side. All of us, the sheep and Jack included, have immediately taken to having a llama at the Wakefield Estate and feel protected under his big watchful eyes.
