Wakefield Bees Get a Winter Check-up

2009.01.02-Bees-01

Wakefield Estate’s beekeeper Scott Harris recently visited the bee hive to check on the status and health of the bees within. It is important for the beekeeper to check the hive covering to make sure it is secure and getting sun, and to make sure the bees have adequate food for the duration of winter.

Honeybees live through the winter by creating a massive cluster in the middle of the hive around the queen. A healthy hive will stay above 70 degrees inside, warmed by the heat generated by thousands of pulsating wings.

Scott will do a hive inspection demonstration again in Spring.
