Summer Archaeology Sessions Unearthing a Treasure Trove

The first session of the 2012 Summer Archaeology Institute wrapped up on Friday, July 20 after several days of exciting excavation. This year's focus is in the lowest terrace of the estate's Formal Garden, at a site believed to be the location of the original summer house. The Institute's STPs(shovel test pits) unearthed artifacts from the first day of digging, making for a fruitful and rewarding session for the students and teachers involved. Jenny Wildt and Sara Belkin, two PhD candidates from Boston University, are directing the 2012 Institute with assistance from several other PhD candidates from the archaeology program. Session 2 began today and will run for two weeks. Participating students come from a wide range of schools including Boston, Milton, Newton and Randolph - we even have a student visiting from Virginia!
