Description
The Wakefield Estate offers an unique Program designed for high school-age youth; offers hands-on opportunity in archaeological excavation at historic site in Milton.
Registration is now open for the Wakefield Estate’s 7th annual Summer Archaeology Institute this July. Milton’s historic Wakefield Estate hosts two 2-week sessions of the institute, a hands-on archaeological program designed for high school students interested in having an unusual and enriching experience this summer, while learning about archaeology and local history. Participants will work side by side with doctoral students from Boston University’s Department of Archaeology on an on-going archaeological excavation at the estate. It is an outstanding program, perhaps the only one of its type in the country.
In addition to acquiring basic laboratory skills, and learning the methods and techniques involved in conducting archaeology, participants also gain experience in identifying artifacts, such as the 1789 George Washington Inaugural button (see photo attached) found during one of the recent excavations. Each two-week session of the institute includes a field trip to visit another active archaeological site in the Boston area.
There are two sessions offered for the summer of 2016:
- Session I: July 5 -July 15; M-F, 9am-3pm
- Session II: July 18-July 29; M-F, 9am-3pm
The cost is $300 per session, $450 for both. For more information or to receive an application, call 617-333-0924.
