Bring Your Family to Arbor Day 2017 Earth Celebration 4/21

The Wakefield Estate and the Milton Shade Tree Advisory Committee are collaborating for an Arbor Day Earth Celebration on Friday, April 21st from 11 am until 2 pm with a family-friendly program of activities. This event will have a "trees are great for the earth" emphasis- mashing Earth Day and Arbor Day with a fun range of activities including tree planting & give-away, make a "worm compost" session, Citizen Scientist tree phenology (observing), "BYOPicnic" and "mud and worm sundae" making!  Please call 617-333-0924 to RSVP.

We Are Sad to Say Goodbye to Our Beloved Dave Cafaro

The staff and Trustees are sad to say goodbye to Dave Cafaro, Buildings and Grounds Manager, and "the guy who can fix anything." Dave has been a valued employee, colleague, and friend for over nine years. We wish him all the best with his new endeavors and promise to call him when the irrigation system breaks down! Good luck, Dave. We'll really miss you!

Lecture: Peter Gray on The Power of Play-April 12th

Each year, the Wakefield Estate co-sponsors an annual lecture with the Thacher Montessori School in Milton that looks at some of the cutting edge issues in education and child development. This year’s lecture, The Power of Play and the Joy of Learning, is a fascinating talk about the role of play in learning and child development by noted psychologist Boston College professor Peter Gray. In his talk, Gray will explore how play as activity that is contributes to educational and developmental value. This lecture will be held at the Thacher Montessori School, which is located at 1425 Blue Hill Avenue Milton, MA. Free and open to the public, however, reservations are required. Mushroom Propagation Workshop 4/8

Take home your own gourmet mushroom log for years of mushroom harvesting!

Don’t miss the Wakefield Estate’s annual mushroom growing workshop on Saturday, April 8th from 9:00-11:30 am! After an introduction of different mushroom growing methods, we will teach you how to inoculate logs with shiitake mushroom spawn and send you home with your own “seeded” log which can provide mushrooms for up to 5 years. This is a great family-friendly event. Please bring your own drill and half-inch drill bit if you have one. All materials provided. Space is limited, pre-registration is required.
